In it for themselves

No matter who’s around you showing you love and praise

They will not be around for you when it comes to those dark days
Whilst your high and soaring skies they will want to get to know you
And when they see you crumble they’ll think of how they can dispose you

Bragging, claiming and showing off their material life
Is all they have to offer amongst your pain and strife
Don’t be reliant on good words and unwitnessed deeds
Only focus on yourself and getting what you need

They may make a mockery of what you are standing for
But our graves are rather similar when we’re lowered to the floor
If their ‘stuff’ is remembered over the written word
Then we have failed as a race and are no longer as free as birds

Whether your wealthy, poor, scraping by or just doing fine
None of this will matter in the mechanics of time
If they’re in it for themselves let them swim there on their own
Spend your time bending your mind, a place you can call home
